Red Cell Distribution Width

RDW

Red Cell Distribution Width

Description

RDW looks at the variation in size and volume of your red blood cells (RBCs). It doesn’t measure size directly but tracks how uniform or mixed the cells are.

Think of it like this: healthy red blood cells should be roughly the same size. If your RDW is high, it means there’s a wider range of cell sizes — which can happen when your body is trying to make new cells quickly due to a deficiency or illness.

Why Tested

Assesses anisocytosis and is useful in anemia classification. To detect certain types of anemia, especially when used alongside MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume). A higher RDW may signal nutrient deficiencies (like iron, B12, or folate) or other blood disorders.
