MCH

Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin

Description

MCH reflects the average amount of hemoglobin—the oxygen-carrying protein—inside each red blood cell.Think of each red blood cell as a balloon carrying oxygen. MCH tells you how much “oxygen fuel” is packed into each balloon. If your MCH is too low, your cells might be underfilled—often due to iron deficiency. If it’s too high, your red cells may be enlarged or overstuffed, which can happen with certain vitamin deficiencies like B12 or folate.

Why Tested

Assists in differentiating causes of anemia. MCH is a subtle but powerful clue. On its own, it won’t diagnose a condition—but combined with other CBC markers, it helps your care team understand the shape, quality, and function of your red blood cells.
