Carbon Dioxide, Total

Description

Carbon Dioxide (Total) measures the total amount of carbon dioxide in your blood, which mostly reflects the level of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) — a key substance your body uses to maintain its acid–base (pH) balance.

Although it’s called “carbon dioxide,” this test doesn’t directly measure the gas we exhale — instead, it mainly estimates bicarbonate, which acts as a buffer to keep your blood from becoming too acidic or too alkaline.

Why Tested

It’s used to assess your acid–base status and monitor conditions like kidney disease, respiratory issues, or metabolic imbalances. Doctors often use this marker to help diagnose or monitor: Kidney disease, respiratory conditions, metabolic acidosis or alkalosis, and/or effects of certain medications or dehydration. It gives insight into how your lungs and kidneys are working together to maintain internal stability.
